My journey into the world of chocolate began in exactly the same way as Willy Wonka's - with a dental surgeon father. Thankfully, unlike poor Willy Wonka, I was never told chocolate was off limits. In fact, it was the highlight of our week on a Friday before bed (Guylian Seashells were, and still are, a firm family favourite).

The irony? These days I now work in dentistry too. Unlike my father, my days are spent managing the finances for dental practices on the North Coast where I grew up in Caithness, and my evenings are spent making chocolates. It’s the perfect way to avoid redundancy!

I discovered bonbons in 2020 and, that Christmas, armed with three silicone moulds and some chocolate from Lidl, I decided to make handmade chocolates for everyone I knew. I had no idea what I was doing, but somewhere between learning to temper chocolate and making a spectacular mess of the kitchen, a hobby became a genuine passion.

By 2023, I'd somehow volunteered to make 85 personalised wedding favour boxes for my brother's wedding (mostly because it seemed to be the better option than buying him a present). The chocolates went down brilliantly, although the story most guests remembered was that I'd accidentally eaten an entire batch of Strawberry Crisp Bonbons and had to remake them the week of the wedding. I am less proud of that part…

That little side project has now become North Coast Chocolate Company.

Today, I'm lucky to be building it alongside my sister-in-law, Grace. As our self-appointed "company generalist", she keeps everything running behind the scenes while making sure my extravagant desires for a chocolate river stays (mostly) under control.

Together, we create handcrafted chocolates that celebrate the best that Scotland and my hometown, Thurso, has to offer. Through thoughtful design and carefully chosen ingredients, we hope every box shares a little piece of the North Coast with you.
